Calling all men who enjoy singing. The Canterbury Plainsmen Barbershop Chorus is holding an Open night at 7.00 p.m. at Upper Riccarton Methodist Church on Monday 20th February.

We are a group of 50 men of all ages who love to sing together in the barbershop style- a beautiful melody with 3 other parts harmonising in such a way  sound waves interact to create notes that are not being sung and the chords sound magically rich and full.

We normally meet each Monday night, sing a variety of music, receive great musical instruction, entertain others in a number of concerts each year and enjoy plenty of fun and fellowship.

Attending the Open Night does not commit you to anything- but if you enjoy singing come try a new experience. But beware, it is very catching!

The Festival of Flowers 2012 to open with a bang! 17/02/2012

The Festival will begin with a concert in the Botanic Gardens. Opened by Deputy Mayor, Ngaire Button, the Festival will mark 23 years of floral art in Christchurch.

As is fitting with a city that is being rebuilt, we have challenged our floral artists to create a floral art installation on a Nikau construction crane. The 11 meter crane arm, covered in vibrant flowers and vines will direct you to the 'colour me beautiful Christchurch' concert

To add colour to the occasion, a mass of children will ‘gate crash’ the concert with ukuleles and choir singers to perform a piece of music dedicated to Christchurch. They will be accompanied by prominent local musicians including Natalie Slade, Judith Bell and the great Stu Buchanan, alongside special guests the Global voices Choir and the Swingtown Rebels dance group.

Festival organizer Lisa Mills says “Music and art have such a positive impact on people. As the anniversary of the 2011 earthquake approaches we need to honour what we’ve lost and also look forward to a bright future. That’s why this is a free event for the people and a good chance to enjoy floral art, and all the colours of the Botanic Gardens”.

The event on Friday the 17th of February will be held in the Archery Lawn of the Botanic gardens. There will be live music and dancing from 6.30 to 8.00pm.

The concert is free and open to the public.

There was once a time when the local news was spread from town to town by travelling players, who entertained the people with wit, song, and tales of adventure and villainy.

A new show performed and devised by Lucette Hindin, Lisa Tui and Damien McGrath draws on this tradition, planning a tour of Canterbury towns and suburbs with a portable stage which can be set up on any flat piece of ground. Audiences will be entertained by the adventures of Deidre (a weeper), Margaret (a fix-er-up-er) and Wade (a worrier) as they navigate familliar experiences from the 2010-2011 Canterbury earthquakes.

Come here your eyes, your ears, your hearts, to this direction where the earth bed parts,

Smell mountains and rivers, valleys and nooks, taste dust and disaster, wet mud, silt and brooks...
